An Open Letter

To: Pres. Biden, Rep. Miller-Meeks, Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst

From: A verified voter in Iowa City, IA

April 30

As you should be aware, many small colleges have been closing and those of us working at small colleges are being warned how close we are to closure due to financial hardship, exacerbated by external factors. Our country is not served by fewer quality educational opportunities for students across the country — nor by the unemployment caused by entire institutions closing. Public universities, too, are being stripped of essential resources by state governments with which to serve fully their students and hard-working employees. I call on the federal government to consider measures to save and sustain higher education before this situation becomes a full catastrophe. Thank you for considering what can be done at the federal level to stop schools from closing, which upends current students’ lives, leaves prospective students with fewer options, and leaves faculty and staff with no options to survive other than welfare and Medicaid.
