Congress: Demand US Follow Int’l Law in Iran War

To: Rep. Liccardo, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A verified voter in Saratoga, CA

March 6

Today I take pen in hand to write and demand that the United States immediately cease unlawful military operations in Iran and comply with international humanitarian law. The joint US-Israel attacks have resulted in catastrophic civilian casualties that constitute grave violations of the laws of war. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, 787 people have been killed in Iran since these attacks began. On February 28, 2026, approximately 165 people were killed when a school in Minab, Hormozgan province was struck, including around 150 school children. The United Nations described this as a grave violation of humanitarian law, and human rights organizations have been able to independently verify the attacks hit civilian areas and hospitals. International humanitarian law strictly prohibits direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects, indiscriminate strikes, and disproportionate attacks. Aerial attacks on schools and medical facilities raise grave concerns of possible war crimes. The school strike might have occurred near an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Compound, but proximity to a military target does not justify an attack that kills 150 children. This conflict has now expanded to involve more than 10 countries, with Iranian retaliatory strikes killing civilians across the region. The escalation demonstrates the catastrophic consequences of unlawful military action. I urge you to pressure the Pentagon take immediate action to ensure US military operations comply with international humanitarian law, to publicly oppose attacks on civilian infrastructure including schools and hospitals, support independent international monitoring of all parties' conduct, and pursue diplomatic solutions to prevent further military escalation. There is yet time to stop the killing. Our nation must uphold these obligations rather than participate in violations that kill hundreds of civilians, including children. Demand oversight of the Dept. of Defense. Blind adherence to orders does not justify any if the actions we’ve seen. Thank you.
