Unelected individuals like Elon Musk, and president-elect Trump, should not be dictating fiscal policy. Congress must work together to pass a responsible spending bill that funds essential services without excessive add-ons. Political brinkmanship that triggers a shutdown risks disrupting vital operations and payments, from Social Security and Medicare benefits to airport screenings during a busy travel season. Lawmakers owe it to their constituents to put partisan interests aside and reach a reasonable compromise that averts a damaging shutdown. A temporary resolution can provide more time for negotiations on a longer-term funding solution.
