The legislative branch holds the power of the purse, and ultimately it is up to Congress to approve spending measures that keep the government operating and serving the American people. Unelected individuals like Elon Musk, and president-elect Trump, should not be dictating fiscal policy. Congress must work together to pass a responsible spending bill that funds essential services without excessive add-ons. Political brinkmanship that triggers a shutdown risks disrupting vital operations and payments, from Social Security and Medicare benefits to airport screenings during a busy travel season. Lawmakers owe it to their constituents to put partisan interests aside and reach a reasonable compromise that averts a damaging shutdown. A temporary resolution can provide more time for negotiations on a longer-term funding solution.
