Urgent Need for Science-Based Leadership to Address Bird Flu Threat

To: Sen. Cortez Masto, Rep. Amodei, Sen. Rosen

From: A verified voter in Reno, NV

January 6

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing bird flu outbreak and the potential public health crisis it could trigger if the virus mutates to allow human-to-human transmission. A crisis of this magnitude requires decisive and science-driven leadership—something I fear may be lacking under the incoming administration. Already, there are troubling signs that economic concerns are being prioritized over public health, with inadequate measures being taken to cull infected livestock. This hesitancy, coupled with a potential mutation of the virus, could lead to widespread infection and loss of life. The lessons from COVID-19 are clear: public health crises demand swift action, transparent communication, and trust in science. Unfortunately, the incoming administration's track record raises serious doubts about its ability to lead effectively in this area. The Trump administration frequently undermined public health efforts with misinformation and poor messaging during COVID-19. A similar approach to the bird flu would be devastating. Compounding these concerns is the consideration of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. His history of spreading anti-vaccine misinformation and promoting pseudoscience disqualifies him from such a critical role. Appointing RFK Jr. to HHS would be a reckless decision at any time, but it is particularly dangerous when the bird flu virus is just one mutation away from human-to-human transmission. At this crucial moment, we need leaders who will base their decisions on scientific evidence, encourage public trust in vaccines, and act boldly to protect public health. I urge you to not only oppose RFK Jr.'s potential appointment but also to take a vocal stand against the dangers his leadership would pose—especially in the context of the current bird flu threat. Public health and safety must remain our top priority, and it is essential that Congress demand leadership that reflects this commitment. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical issue. I hope you will advocate for the science-based leadership we need to navigate these uncertain times.
