An Open Letter

To: Sen. Burton, Gov. DeSantis, Rep. Tomkow

From: A constituent in Davenport, FL

July 25

The treatment of detainees at the facility known as "Alligator Alcatraz" is unacceptable and a violation of basic human rights. Recent reports indicate that detainees are subject to inhumane conditions, including being denied proper food, water, medical care, and access to legal counsel. Some detainees have even resorted to a hunger strike in protest of these conditions. Holding individuals in such deplorable circumstances is a stain on our nation's values and principles. I urge you to take immediate action to shut down this facility and transfer the detainees to locations where their fundamental rights and dignities will be respected. No person, regardless of their immigration status, should be subjected to the kinds of abuses allegedly occurring at Alligator Alcatraz. We must uphold our commitment to human rights and treat all individuals with the basic decency and respect they deserve. The situation at Alligator Alcatraz is a moral and legal crisis that demands a swift and compassionate response. The continued operation of this facility is an affront to the ideals of justice and human dignity that our nation claims to uphold. I implore you to use your authority to close Alligator Alcatraz and ensure that all detainees are relocated to humane and lawful facilities without delay. The integrity of our immigration system and our standing as a nation of laws and human rights hang in the balance.
