Protect NOAA's vital climate research and forecasting capabilities

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Turner

April 11

The Trump administration's proposal to severely cut funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is alarming and would cripple vital weather and climate research programs. Eliminating NOAA's research arm, climate science initiatives, and regional data centers would jeopardize accurate forecasting capabilities and our understanding of severe weather events like tornadoes. This move undermines public safety and disregards the millions who rely on NOAA's data for agriculture, transportation, disaster preparedness, and other critical sectors. With climate change increasing the frequency of extreme weather, gutting NOAA's programs is irresponsible and hazardous. Robust climate monitoring and research are essential to protecting communities and infrastructure. This destructive plan warrants urgent Congressional intervention to prevent implementation of draconian cuts that leave the nation vulnerable. Maintaining NOAA's resources and scientific integrity should be a paramount priority to safeguard life and economic stability.
