I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump, purportedly to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This proposal is not only illegal but also a gross misrepresentation of what such a commemoration should entail. Federal law explicitly prohibits the portrayal of living individuals on U.S. currency, a crucial safeguard against the glorification of current political figures. The fact that U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach would suggest such a design shows a alarming disregard for established law and the principles of our democracy. The proposed design, featuring Trump's profile on both sides with the phrase "FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT," is particularly egregious. This slogan, referencing Trump's words after a 2024 assassination attempt, promotes division rather than unity. It fails entirely to celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary or reflect the values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. While the 2020 legislation authorized commemorative $1 coins for the semiquincentennial in 2026, this does not override the prohibition on depicting living persons. Creating such a coin would set a dangerous precedent, blurring the line between honoring historical figures and promoting a cult of personality. The back design of the coin is especially concerning. Rather than celebrating our nation's rich 250-year history, it appears to be blatant pandering to a political base. A true commemoration of our nation's founding should reflect our collective heritage, the principles of liberty and equality, and the progress we've made as a nation – not serve as a campaign tool for any individual. I urge you to take immediate action to stop this illegal and divisive proposal. Please ensure that the U.S. Mint and Treasury adhere to existing laws and focus on creating commemorative coins that genuinely celebrate our nation's history and values.
