I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent following today’s congressional interview involving Special Counsel Jack Smith. I watched the proceedings closely, and I left with a profound sense of disappointment—not only in the tone of the questioning, but in what it revealed about respect for constitutional principles and the rule of law. Congressional oversight is a serious responsibility. It demands discipline, good faith, and an unwavering commitment to the Constitution rather than to any individual officeholder. The conduct displayed during this interview did not meet that standard. Instead of a substantive examination of facts or law, the exchange appeared dismissive, adversarial, and unmoored from the gravity of the moment. Equally troubling was the lack of respect shown toward the office of the Special Counsel itself. Regardless of political affiliation, the independence of lawful investigations is foundational to our system of government. Undermining that independence for partisan purposes erodes public trust and weakens democratic institutions. I am particularly concerned by what I perceive as a broader unwillingness among members of Congress to assert their constitutional role as a coequal branch of government. Loyalty to any president must never supersede loyalty to the Constitution. When Congress fails to act with courage and independence, it abdicates its duty to the American people. We are at a moment when respect for the rule of law must come before party, and when accountability must be pursued without fear or favor. I urge you to reflect seriously on today’s proceedings and on the example Congress is setting for the nation. I expect my representative to defend democratic norms, uphold constitutional principles, and conduct oversight with professionalism and integrity. Anything less risks lasting damage to our republic.
