An Open Letter

To: Sen. Marshall, Rep. Davids, Sen. Moran

From: A verified voter in Gardner, KS

January 11

I am writing to you not in anger, but in deep concern, sorrow, and urgency. I believe in the rule of law. I believe in accountability. And I believe that in a democracy, no agency—no matter how powerful—should operate without meaningful oversight or restraint. Yet today, I am watching Immigration and Customs Enforcement act in ways that feel increasingly disconnected from those principles, and I am asking you to intervene. Behind every statistic is a human being: families separated without warning, children who go to bed without a parent, workers taken from their communities, and neighbors living in fear of simply existing in public. I cannot reconcile these realities with the values of dignity, fairness, and due process that our country claims to uphold. What troubles me most is not only the harm being done, but the apparent absence of effective checks and balances. When an executive agency is allowed to expand its reach without transparent oversight, clear limits, or meaningful consequences for misconduct, we all lose something essential: trust in our institutions and faith that the law protects the vulnerable as much as it empowers the state. You were elected to serve as a check on executive overreach. That responsibility is not abstract—it is urgent and human. It means asking hard questions, demanding transparency, protecting civil liberties, and refusing to normalize practices that cause lasting harm in the name of enforcement. I am asking you to: • Exercise your oversight authority to investigate ICE practices and leadership. • Support legislation that establishes stronger accountability, humane standards, and enforceable limits on agency power. • Publicly affirm that constitutional rights, due process, and basic human dignity apply to everyone, without exception. This is not about politics for me. It is about what kind of country we choose to be. I want to live in a nation where laws are enforced with compassion, where power is constrained by ethics, and where no community is treated as disposable. Please use your position to restore balance, protect human rights, and ensure that no executive agency operates beyond meaningful democratic control. History will remember who spoke when it mattered.
