Urgent Action Needed: Release the Chokehold on Healthcare for LMI and BIPOC Texans

To: Sen. Eckhardt, Rep. Cole, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Gov. Abbott

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

October 30

As a deeply concerned Texas constituent, I am compelled to address the impending healthcare crisis that disproportionately affects our low and moderate-income (LMI) and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. The approaching open enrollment period for Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance, from November 1 to January 15, brings to light a dire situation that demands immediate attention and action. Texas already holds the unfortunate distinction of having the nation's highest uninsured rate at 16.7%. This alarming statistic is set to worsen dramatically without urgent intervention. The enhanced premium tax credits, which have been a lifeline for many, are scheduled to expire at year's end. The consequences are severe: projections indicate an average 115% increase in premiums for Texans currently benefiting from ACA tax credits. This is not just about numbers; it's about real people – your constituents – forced to choose between their health and financial survival. The situation is further aggravated by a 90% reduction in funding for navigators who assist people in understanding and enrolling in coverage options. This cut in resources will leave many of our most vulnerable citizens struggling to access the care they desperately need. It appears that the current policy direction is creating a chokehold on healthcare access for LMI and BIPOC Texans. This approach seems to prioritize political ideology over the well-being of our communities. The state's reluctance to expand assistance for medical insurance is pushing more people towards ill health, which is not only morally questionable but also economically short-sighted. I urge you to take immediate action to extend the enhanced premium tax credits and restore funding for enrollment assistance programs. These measures are critical to preventing a healthcare catastrophe that will hit our LMI and BIPOC communities the hardest. We need to release this chokehold and ensure that all Texans, regardless of their income or racial background, have access to affordable, quality healthcare. Time is of the essence. With open enrollment beginning on November 1, we need decisive action now. The health and well-being of our diverse communities depend on your leadership in this crucial moment. I implore you to prioritize the health of all Texans, especially those most vulnerable, over political considerations. Work tirelessly to preserve and expand access to affordable healthcare in our state. The chokehold on healthcare must be released – our communities are counting on you to act now.
