Subject: Demand for Immediate Restrictions and Funding Cuts to DHS/ICE Operations
I am writing to demand that you take immediate, decisive action to halt the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) current trajectory of injustice and brutality. The deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti are not mere "incidents"; they are the direct result of a department operating without accountability, fueled by unchecked federal funding.
I urge you to use every legislative tool at your disposal—starting with the pending DHS appropriations bill. It is time to move beyond symbolic gestures and implement the following:
• Filibuster and Block New Funding: Do not provide a single additional dollar to DHS until strict, legally binding guardrails are established.
• Rescind Multi-Year Appropriations: Seek to claw back or prohibit the expenditure of prior multi-year funds that are currently being used to bypass congressional oversight.
• Protect State Sovereignty (The "Minnesota Clause"): Prohibit the expenditure of any federal funds for the deployment of DHS forces in the State of Minnesota—and any other state that does not explicitly consent to such operations.
• End "Administrative" Home Entries: Legally prohibit federal agents from entering private residences without a judicial warrant signed by an independent judge, ending the unconstitutional reliance on internal "administrative warrants."
• Mandate Visibility and Identification: Require all agents to wear clear, visible name tags and prohibit the use of non-medical face masks that obscure their identity during public-facing operations.
If you vote to fund this department without these limitations, you are choosing to be complicit in the "status quo" of state-sanctioned violence. Make the majority party own every raid and every tragedy. Out of this tragedy, you have an opportunity to slow and disable this authoritarian project. For the memory of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, I expect you to think big and act with courage.
