Please Stop the Destruction of Washington’s Historic Trees I am deeply disturbed by the recent removal of mature trees at East Potomac Golf Links, including Washington’s iconic cherry trees. These trees and public spaces belong to the American people. They should not be cut down simply to accommodate the Trump administration’s plans to remake a historic public golf course. I understand the administration claims the trees being removed are hazardous, diseased, or otherwise need to come down. Given the scale of the removals and the administration’s plans for this property, I want more than assurances from officials and arborists working for the same administration carrying out the project. There should be transparency and independent scrutiny before mature, historic trees are destroyed—not explanations after they are already gone. Please use your oversight authority to protect East Potomac Park and Washington’s historic cherry trees from unnecessary removal and require public disclosure of the justification for any further tree cutting. The President does not own Washington, D.C. These are our public spaces and our trees, and they should be treated that way.
