I’m writing to urge strong congressional oversight in response to the administration’s contradictory and destabilizing approach to drug-trafficking policy — particularly the planned pardon of former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández and the escalating posture toward Venezuela. Hernández was convicted in U.S. court for enabling massive cocaine shipments into the United States and running what prosecutors described as a “narco-state.” Pardoning him for political reasons sends a dangerous message that accountability for drug trafficking is negotiable. It undermines the credibility of our justice system, weakens deterrence, and alienates regional partners who rely on consistent U.S. leadership to combat transnational crime. Simultaneously, the administration’s aggressive claims about Venezuelan airspace — made without clear legal grounding or transparent military consultation — risk unnecessary escalation. These statements appear improvisational, yet they carry significant consequences for civilian aviation, regional stability, and U.S. diplomatic relationships. The contrast is stark: leniency toward a convicted trafficker on one hand, and saber-rattling toward another government on the other. If the United States wants to confront drug trafficking seriously, it must apply the law consistently and avoid actions that destabilize an entire region. I urge Congress to investigate the circumstances of the Hernández pardon, demand clarity and restraint on any proposed airspace or military measures involving Venezuela, and reinforce limits that prevent the misuse of presidential powers in high-stakes criminal cases. Our national security and global credibility depend on it.
