Your words ring hollow after your budget vote

To: Rep. Bacon

From: A constituent in Papillion, NE

May 22

I am writing as a concerned constituent of Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District to express my deep disappointment in your recent votes supporting budget proposals that threaten critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP—programs that thousands of Nebraskans, including children, seniors, and working families, rely on for their health and well-being. Your vote to advance a budget blueprint that includes nearly $900 billion in cuts to Medicaid and $300 billion in cuts to SNAP is not only alarming—it is a betrayal of the very people you were elected to represent. According to the DCCC, over 120,000 people in our district depend on Medicaid, and more than 23,000 households rely on SNAP, over half of which include children These cuts would devastate families, threaten the closure of nursing homes, and harm Nebraska’s agricultural economy by reducing food spending. I am particularly troubled by the contradiction between your public statements and your actions. In April, you signed a letter with other Republicans cautioning against Medicaid cuts, stating that “balancing the federal budget must not come at the expense of those who depend on these benefits”. Yet, just weeks later, you voted in favor of a budget that does exactly that. Your justification—that you were assured the final bill would be “more moderate” and that you supported it to advance other priorities like border security and tax cuts—is not acceptable. These assurances ring hollow when the consequences for your constituents are so severe and immediate. Moreover, your support for changes to SNAP under the guise of “restoring integrity” ignores the real impact these changes will have on vulnerable Nebraskans. While addressing fraud is important, the proposed reforms risk punishing those who are already struggling, especially in a state where food insecurity remains a pressing issue. Nebraskans deserve a leader who will stand firm in defense of essential programs—not one who bends to party leadership at the expense of our health and livelihoods. I urge you to reconsider your position and to vote against any final legislation that includes cuts to Medicaid or SNAP.
