I'm writing as your constituent to demand that you oppose the Trump administration's proposed $2.8 billion sale of 40,000 two-thousand-pound bombs to the Israeli military, and that you support a joint resolution of disapproval to block it.
These are among the most destructive conventional weapons in our arsenal. A single one can kill people standing a thousand feet away. Researchers have documented the Israeli military dropping hundreds of these munitions within lethal range of hospitals in Gaza. There is no version of dropping 40,000 more of them on densely populated areas that does not kill large numbers of civilians, and the administration has offered Congress no assurances that would change that.
I also object to how this is being paid for. Most of this package is expected to move through foreign military financing – my tax dollars, granted to a foreign government, spent on American-made bombs. I did not agree to buy these weapons, and neither did the 48% of American voters who now say our government is too supportive of the Israeli military.
Congress has the authority to stop this under the Arms Export Control Act. Rep. Gregory Meeks has already placed a hold on the sale. In April, 40 senators voted to block arms transfers to Israel – the highest total yet. I expect you to be part of the majority that finally stops one.
Please tell me publicly where you stand before this sale is formally notified to Congress.
