As your constituent, I am writing to thank you for blocking the DHS funding bill and to urge you to hold firm during the two-week negotiation window.
Yesterday, thousands of our neighbors in Portland—just across the river from my home in Vancouver—were tear-gassed by federal agents for peacefully protesting ICE. The Portland Mayor issued a statement asking ICE agents to resign and the facility to close. These are people in your district being attacked for exercising their constitutional rights.
At least six immigrants died in ICE custody in January alone. One death was ruled a homicide by a medical examiner. ICE needs to be abolished.
Please do not compromise on the reforms you are demanding:
- Signed federal warrants to enter homes
- Mandatory body cameras
- End to roving patrols
- Clear identification requirements
- Independent oversight
ICE has proven it cannot be trusted to investigate itself. The deaths continue. The violence escalates. Our neighbors are being gassed in the streets.
Hold the line.
