Address safety concerns on Rt. 11 in Downtown Greencastle
To: Rep. Reichard
From: A constituent in Greencastle, PA
February 13
I am writing to request immediate attention to serious safety concerns at the intersection of S. Washington St. and E. Franklin St. in Greencastle. This section of State Road has become increasingly dangerous for both motorists and pedestrians.
Near-collisions occur at this intersection almost daily. Several times each year, crashes result in injuries. Even more concerning, two pedestrians lost their lives last year after being struck by vehicles in downtown Greencastle. This area is heavily traveled by students walking to and from school, placing children and families at significant risk.
The lack of stop signs or other traffic-calming measures, combined with poor visibility caused by street parking and buildings positioned close to the roadway, creates hazardous conditions. Drivers often have obstructed sightlines when approaching the intersection, increasing the likelihood of serious accidents.
Although local officials have stated that this is a State Road and therefore outside municipal authority, the danger remains urgent and ongoing. I respectfully request that the appropriate state agency conduct a formal traffic and safety study of this intersection and consider implementing solutions such as improved signage, a traffic signal, enhanced crosswalk markings, restricted corner parking, or other proven safety measures.
