Protect Workers’ Rights — Stop Attacks on Unions and Collective Bargaining

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

January 23

I’m writing to urge you to take immediate action to protect workers’ rights and the ability of unions to represent federal employees fairly and legally. Recent events show the administration is escalating efforts to weaken or remove lawful union representation across parts of the federal workforce by claiming expanded “national security” authority, while also arguing that unions should face narrower and more limited options to challenge those actions. This is not simply a bureaucratic disagreement—it is a direct threat to workplace rights, due process, and accountability. Unions provide essential protections that ensure fair treatment, consistent enforcement of workplace rules, and a safe channel for employees to raise concerns without fear of retaliation. When collective bargaining rights are undermined, workers can lose protections related to scheduling, discipline, workplace safety, and basic fairness on the job. That hurts not only federal employees, but also the public they serve. Federal workers are your constituents. They live in our communities, spend money locally, raise families here, and keep essential services running every day. Undermining their workplace protections creates instability, lowers morale, increases turnover, and weakens the government’s ability to function effectively. I urge you to oppose efforts to strip collective bargaining rights from federal employees and to support strong oversight and legislative action that will: • Protect collective bargaining rights for federal workers • Prevent “national security” claims from being misused to eliminate lawful union representation • Ensure workers and unions have a fair and enforceable process to challenge actions that remove representation rights • Defend due process protections and prevent retaliation against employees who speak up Please stand up for working people, protect lawful union rights, and ensure the federal workforce is treated with fairness and respect—not targeted for political reasons.
