To whom it may concern,
I’m writing about a tire recycling method developed at UNC Chapel Hill, published in Nature in March 2025. The process uses a sulfur diimide reagent and mild solvents to break down rubber into epoxy resin precursors.
While the chemistry is promising, the solvents and reagents involved are flammable and irritating, and the process hasn’t been tested at industrial scale. Before any federal funding supports scale-up, I ask that you require a full lifecycle analysis — including solvent emissions, waste handling, and air quality impacts — as a condition of further financial funding assistance Department of Energy support.
Thank you for your attention. Air quality control and environmental factors are critical to ensuring future generations safety. To include how the elements of environmental factors could leak into our ozone layer.
