Governor Abbott’s deployment of the Texas National Guard ahead of peaceful anti-ICE protests is a troubling misuse of power. National Guard troops are trained for combat, not crowd control. Reports of using chemical irritants and aggressive tactics resemble war zones more than civic protests, turning public safety into intimidation.
Both party leaders and legal scholars agree that democracy flourishes with power close to the people, not in authoritarian hands. The Posse Comitatus Act limits military involvement in domestic law enforcement because soldiers are not police officers.
This deployment escalates tension and erodes public trust. We must demand transparency, accountability, and legislative review of these actions to ensure military use in civilian settings has proper oversight.
Our democracy is at stake; it's time to take action to bring Texans together rather than tear them apart.
