Protect Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments

To: Sen. Whitehouse, Sen. Reed, Rep. Magaziner

From: A constituent in Warwick, RI

July 30

I passionately urge immediate legislative action to safeguard and permanently protect Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. These landscapes are among America’s most treasured natural and cultural assets, deserving steadfast preservation rather than reduction or opening to industrial development through shifting executive orders. Recent presidential proclamations have significantly reduced the size of both monuments, removing protections from nearly three million acres of public land and reopening large areas to mining, drilling, and industrial activities. These decisions have reignited a fierce debate that has challenged multiple administrations, creating uncertainty for communities, Tribal Nations, scientists, outdoor enthusiasts, and land managers alike. (AP News: https://apnews.com/article/69f14749f13a7ac6fb6ee07ce4cd84bf?utm_source=chatgpt.com) Bears Ears holds deep spiritual importance for many Indigenous Nations and contains thousands of irreplaceable archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. Meanwhile, Grand Staircase-Escalante features some of North America’s most significant geological and paleontological sites, supporting unique ecosystems, exciting recreational opportunities, and pioneering research. Once damaged by large-scale extraction or infrastructure projects, these treasures can never truly be recovered. These public lands belong to all Americans, not just one administration or industry. They surpass the minerals underground, providing clean air and water, protecting wildlife habitats, fueling outdoor economies, supporting scientific research, and honoring the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples who have intertwined their histories with these lands for generations. Congress holds the power and responsibility to ensure these lands are protected for the long haul. I urge you to: - Pass legislation to permanently preserve the original boundaries of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. - Foster meaningful Tribal co-management and consultation to recognize their cultural importance. - Reject proposals that prioritize short-term industrial gains over invaluable natural and cultural heritage. - Affirm that America’s public lands are a collective legacy, meant to be conserved for future generations. History will judge whether we prioritized immediate profits or embraced lasting stewardship. Future Americans deserve the opportunity to experience these magnificent landscapes as places of awe, discovery, history, and cultural pride, not as monuments to what we lost when protections could have been stronger. Act now to protect Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante for today’s citizens and those of tomorrow. Let’s preserve these extraordinary places for future generations to cherish and explore.
