These landscapes are among America’s most treasured natural and cultural assets, deserving steadfast preservation rather than reduction or opening to industrial development through shifting executive orders. Recent presidential proclamations have significantly reduced the size of both monuments, removing protections from nearly three million acres of public land and reopening large areas to mining, drilling, and industrial activities. These decisions have reignited a fierce debate that has challenged multiple administrations, creating uncertainty for communities, Tribal Nations, scientists, outdoor enthusiasts, and land managers alike. Once damaged by large-scale extraction or infrastructure projects, these treasures can never truly be recovered. These public lands belong to all Americans, not just one administration or industry. They surpass the minerals underground, providing clean air and water, protecting wildlife habitats, fueling outdoor economies, supporting scientific research, and honoring the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples who have intertwined their histories with these lands for generations. Congress holds the power and responsibility to ensure these lands are protected for the long haul.
