I am writing to you today as a constituent to respectfully urge you to oppose the reauthorization or reenactment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), specifically Section 702, in its current form.
While national security is a paramount priority, the recurring "backdoor search loophole" has allowed for the warrantless surveillance of American citizens, a direct contradiction of our Fourth Amendment protections. As a lawmaker committed to the principles of limited government and individual liberty, I trust you recognize the danger of maintaining a system that lacks robust, transparent judicial oversight.
Recent history has shown that these powers are too easily weaponized against political dissent and used to bypass the constitutional requirement for a warrant. Any intelligence tool that treats law-abiding Americans like foreign adversaries undermines the very freedom it is meant to protect.
I ask that you stand firm on the following points:
• Warrant Requirements: Oppose any reenactment that does not mandate a specific warrant for queries involving U.S. persons.
• Accountability: Support measures that penalize the misuse of surveillance data.
• Privacy First: Ensure that government overreach is curtailed in favor of the Bill of Rights.
The American people deserve a security strategy that respects the Constitution rather than one that treats it as an obstacle.
