Silence Is Complicity — Our Independent Voice Has Nothing to Say About Gulags?

To: Rep. Fitzpatrick

From: A constituent in Morrisville, PA

April 16

I am a constituent in PA-1, and today—April 16th at 10:58 a.m.—I called your D.C. office to ask a direct question: “What is Brian Fitzpatrick’s stance on what is happening in El Salvador and the innocent people being sent to a gulag without due process?” The response? “He hasn’t released one.” That is unacceptable. As a leader who brands himself as “Our Independent Voice,” how can you stay silent while innocent civilians—children, students, workers—are rounded up, denied due process, and imprisoned in conditions that mirror gulags? Donald Trump has praised Nayib Bukele as a model for “law and order,” while turning a blind eye to the collapse of democratic institutions in El Salvador. When you stay silent, you don’t just enable Bukele—you signal that the United States is willing to look the other way when authoritarianism rises, as long as it’s politically convenient. Bukele is eroding human rights. But Trump is normalizing it here. And your refusal to speak is a stain on the office you hold. If you truly stand for bipartisan integrity, human rights, and the rule of law, it is time to prove it. Speak up. Take action. Show the people of this district—and the world—that the United States does not tolerate authoritarian cruelty, whether at home or abroad. Do better.
