I am writing to express my strong opposition to Ohio Senate Bill 56, which disregards the will of the people and threatens the state’s economy. Ohioans made their voices clear when we voted to legalize cannabis, and it is unacceptable for lawmakers to undermine that decision. You were elected to represent us, not to overrule a law that was passed by the people.
Not only does SB 56 defy the democratic process, but it also jeopardizes critical funding for programs that Ohioans supported in the original ballot measure. The revenue from cannabis sales was meant to fund social equity initiatives, substance abuse treatment, and investments in the communities most impacted by past drug policies. Instead, this bill seeks to redirect those funds toward prisons, law enforcement, and other interests that do not reflect the priorities of the voters. This is a blatant betrayal of what Ohioans approved at the ballot box.
On top of that, Ohio’s legal cannabis market is already facing challenges due to high prices and limited accessibility. Instead of working to make the industry competitive, SB 56 will push even more Ohioans to take their money to Michigan, where cannabis is more affordable and accessible. Rather than keeping tax dollars in Ohio and using them for programs that benefit our communities, this bill ensures we continue losing revenue to a neighboring state.
It is shameful that lawmakers are spending time and taxpayer money trying to dismantle a law that has already been decided instead of addressing real issues that impact Ohioans’ daily lives. There are far more pressing concerns—like lowering costs of living, improving education, fixing our infrastructure, and expanding healthcare access. The people of Ohio deserve a government that listens to them, not one that ignores their votes in favor of political agendas.
I urge you to respect the will of the voters and reject SB 56. Ohioans have spoken—now it’s time for our elected officials to listen.
