Remove Thomas Fugate from his position overseeing the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships immediately and replace him with someone who has actual national security experience.
Fugate is a 22-year-old recent college graduate whose only qualifications are campaign work for Trump. He has no counterterrorism expertise. His predecessor was an Army veteran with over two decades of national security experience. CP3 staffers say meetings with Fugate are like "career counseling" because he knows so little about the basics of his role.
This appointment is reckless. In the past seven weeks alone, five high-profile attacks have hit the U.S., including a car bombing in California, the shooting of two Israeli Embassy aides in Washington, an arson attack on Governor Josh Shapiro, a mass shooting at Florida State University by an alleged white supremacist, and a firebombing in Colorado that wounded 12 people. CP3 has been gutted from 80 employees to fewer than 20, and your budget proposal eliminates its $18 million grant program that has funded over 1,100 community initiatives to prevent violent extremism.
The department founded to prevent terrorism no longer prioritizes preventing it. This is unacceptable. Appoint qualified leadership to CP3 now.
