I'm calling on you to demand that our military leadership publicly refuse to carry out President Trump's threatened attacks on Iranian civilian infrastructure. Destroying every bridge and power plant in Iran, as Trump promised by midnight Tuesday, would be a clear war crime under the Geneva Conventions.
Targeting water and electricity plants that serve civilian populations is illegal under international law, regardless of their proximity to industrial sites. Our service members should not be ordered to commit acts that could later subject them to war crimes prosecution.
Trump dismissed questions about war crimes during his press conference, but our military has an obligation under the Uniform Code of Military Justice to refuse unlawful orders. The deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure like bridges and power plants serves no legitimate military purpose when the stated goal is forcing Iran to negotiate.
I expect you to publicly call on the Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs to clarify that U.S. forces will not participate in attacks on civilian infrastructure. Our troops deserve clear guidance that protects them from being ordered to commit prosecutable offenses. The troops should refuse to follow any illegal orders including those that are clearly recognized war crimes. In the second paragraph add bridges to them list of civilian infrastructure.
