I am writing to demand congressional oversight and accountability regarding the administration’s opaque handling of Venezuela. Rushing to cut transactional deals that secure unilateral foreign oilfield access while arbitrarily lifting sanctions on key regime figures makes a mockery of our stated commitment to human rights and democratic transition.
Foreign policy driven by backroom energy arrangements rather than long-term democratic stability does not serve American values or regional security. The Venezuelan people have suffered immensely under systematic oppression, and trading away leverage for quick-fix resource extraction leaves local democratic opposition movements high and dry. We cannot claim to stand for freedom abroad while endorsing convenient realpolitik that empowers authoritarian apparatuses behind closed doors.
I urge you to use your position on Capitol Hill to demand full transparency from the State Department regarding these backdoor arrangements. Congress must assert its oversight role to ensure that any shifts in U.S. policy toward Caracas are strictly conditioned on transparent democratic reforms, the release of political prisoners, and verifiable free elections rather than corporate resource grabs.
