Oppose inadequate terror finance/hostage relief legislation
To: Sen. Bennet, Sen. Hickenlooper
From: A constituent in Kittredge, CO
November 21
Members of Congress must ensure that American citizens unlawfully detained abroad do not face unnecessary tax penalties and burdens during their ordeal. The Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act provides vital relief by postponing tax deadlines, reimbursing paid late fees, and establishing a program to refund penalties incurred by eligible individuals during detention periods. This legislation also aims to curtail support for terrorist organizations by terminating the tax-exempt status of groups providing material assistance to such entities. The provisions addressing tax relief for detained Americans are critical steps to ease the financial strain on these individuals and their families during immensely challenging circumstances beyond their control. Furthermore, the measures targeting terrorist-supporting organizations send a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated and enjoy favorable tax treatment. Prompt enactment of this bill is essential to uphold principles of justice, support American hostages, and combat the financing of terrorist organizations. I urge you to oppose this bill as it falls short in providing comprehensive reform to address the systemic issues underlying unlawful detentions and support for terrorist activities. A more holistic approach, addressing root causes and prioritizing human rights over profits, is desperately needed.
