Safeguarding Democracy: Congress Must Rein in Musk's DOGE Overreach

To: Pres. Trump, Sen. Budd, Sen. Tillis, Rep. McDowell

From: A constituent in Lexington, NC

February 6

The actions of Elon Musk and his organization DOGE raise significant concerns about the separation of powers and the rule of law. An unelected billionaire should not have the authority to dismantle federal agencies, access sensitive government data, or unilaterally make sweeping changes without congressional oversight or approval. This is a troubling violation of established democratic processes and norms. We must insist on accountability and transparency. Musk's refusal to testify before Congress and provide explanations for his actions is unacceptable. His attempts to gut agencies like USAID, the Department of Labor, and NOAA, while threatening the livelihoods of dedicated public servants, cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. Furthermore, granting Musk and his inexperienced staff unfettered access to critical systems like Medicare payments and weather data is reckless and jeopardizes the integrity of these essential services. Such actions undermine public trust and put the well-being of citizens at risk. It is imperative that Congress exercises its constitutional authority and takes immediate steps to curb these alarming overreaches. Issuing a subpoena to compel Musk's testimony and limiting DOGE's influence over government operations are necessary to uphold the principles of checks and balances enshrined in our democratic system. Protecting the integrity of our institutions and the rule of law must be the highest priority.
