End donor and legacy preferences in higher education

To: Gov. Newsom, Asm. Zbur, Sen. Allen

From: A verified voter in Los Angeles, CA

August 28

I’m writing to ask you to support AB 1780, which ends legacy preferences in university admissions. Legacy and donor preferences, which are especially common in private schools, harm the state’s goal of ensuring that its higher education system is equally accessible to all residents. This is especially important as California’s world-class institutions are a powerful driver of economic mobility and bring immense benefits to the state’s economy and its people. Giving the children of wealthy alumni is counter to this goal of equality and economic mobility, and instead perpetuates the cycle of generational wealth and privilege. I urge you to support AB 1780 for this reason.
