GOP’s war on education is war on America

To: Rep. Bacon, Sen. Fischer, Sen. Ricketts

From: A constituent in Papillion, NE

July 14

What exactly do you think will happen if you gut the Department of Education? Who benefits from that? Certainly not the millions of students who rely on public schools, federal aid, civil rights protections, and basic educational resources. Let’s be clear: this isn’t just policy tinkering — this is sabotage. And we see it for exactly what it is. The push to dismantle the Department of Education is not about efficiency or “local control” — it’s about abandoning your responsibility to America’s children, especially the ones who don’t have the privilege of private tutors, well-funded districts, or political connections. You were not elected to turn your back on students, families, and teachers. But that’s exactly what you’re doing if you stand by while public education is gutted. Cutting down the very agency that ensures Title I funding, protects the rights of students with disabilities, enforces civil rights laws in schools, and helps first-generation college students access financial aid is cowardly and shortsighted — and we will not forget it. Do not insult us by pretending this is about saving money or returning power to the people. This is about deliberate neglect. This is about trying to dismantle public institutions for political theater. And we’re furious. If you care at all about the future of this country — about democracy, equity, or even basic decency — then you must act immediately to protect and strengthen the Department of Education. You must invest in it. You must defend it from these senseless attacks.
