Trump threatens to deport citizens—Impeach now!

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Carey

From: A constituent in Columbus, OH

April 14

I am writing to you as a concerned constituent deeply alarmed by President Trump’s recent statements and actions, which I believe constitute a clear and present threat to our constitutional order. Most disturbingly, President Trump was caught today telling the president of El Salvador that he plans to deport “homegrown” criminals—presumably American citizens—to El Salvador. This chilling statement implies the forcible removal of U.S. citizens without due process, a direct violation of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the Constitution. Stripping citizens of their rights and forcibly exiling them would be an unprecedented abuse of executive power and an outright assault on the rule of law. This statement comes amid an increasingly defiant stance by the Trump administration toward the United States Supreme Court, including open resistance to its rulings and guidance. This disregard for the judicial branch not only undermines the separation of powers but also places us squarely in the midst of a constitutional crisis. We cannot wait for further damage. The President’s authoritarian rhetoric and lawless behavior demand immediate action. I urge you to begin impeachment proceedings without delay. Congress must assert its constitutional authority to check a rogue executive before irreversible harm is done to our democracy. I am calling on you not only to speak out but to act. History will remember those who stood up to defend the Constitution—and those who stood by.
