gender-affirming care for transgender youth

I am writing as a concerned therapist about SB 1586, a bill that could severely limit access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth and create significant legal and financial risks for healthcare professionals providing such care. As a mental health professional, I am deeply concerned that this bill could discourage therapists from offering essential support to transgender minors, leaving them without the care they so desperately need.
The bill would impose a 25-year liability period on healthcare providers for gender-affirming care, which is unprecedented in any other area of medical care. This would create an environment of fear and uncertainty, making it far more difficult for transgender youth to receive appropriate care. The lack of access to mental health support could lead to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality, which is a tragic outcome we must avoid.
Gender-affirming care is supported by major medical organizations like the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as extensive research showing its positive impact on the mental health of transgender youth. This care is provided only after careful evaluation and with parental involvement. SB 1586 misrepresents this crucial care and puts both healthcare providers and families at risk.
I urge you to oppose SB 1586 and stand up for the well-being of transgender youth in Arizona. These minors deserve access to affirming care, and we must ensure that they are not denied this vital support based on fear or misinformation.
Thank you for your time and action.
