I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Trump administration's recent efforts to dismantle critical regulations addressing PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly known as "forever chemicals." These chemicals are linked to serious health issues, including cancer, immune suppression, and developmental harm. The administration's actions not only undermine public health protections but also prioritize corporate interests over the well-being of American families.
The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) withdrawal of proposed rules to limit PFAS discharges into industrial wastewater is particularly concerning. This decision delays the establishment of essential federal standards and emboldens polluters to continue contaminating our water supplies without fear of consequence.
Furthermore, the administration's efforts to reverse state-level bans on PFAS in consumer products, such as food packaging and clothing, would expose the public to higher levels of these toxic substances. Such actions jeopardize decades of progress made by states like California, Maine, and Connecticut in protecting their residents from harmful chemicals.
As a resident of Washington, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact of these rollbacks on our community. Rural areas often lack the resources to address environmental contamination effectively, making federal protections even more crucial.
I urge you to take immediate action to:
1 Oppose the rollback of PFAS regulations and support efforts to strengthen protections against these toxic chemicals.
2 Advocate for the restoration of state-level bans on PFAS to ensure that communities can continue to safeguard public health.
3 Support funding for local water treatment facilities to help them meet existing PFAS standards and protect our drinking water.
The health and safety of our communities should not be compromised for corporate profits. I urge you to stand with your constituents and protect us from the dangers posed by PFAS contamination.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
