Demand Congressional Action to Halt Unauthorized Military Strikes on Iran

To: Rep. Schmidt

From: A verified voter in Leavenworth, KS

March 2

I am writing to demand immediate congressional action to stop President Trump's unauthorized military escalation against Iran. Over the past two days, the administration has conducted extensive joint strikes with Israel across Iran without congressional authorization, killing hundreds of civilians and pushing us toward a catastrophic regional war. On Saturday, US B-2 stealth bombers armed with 2,000-lb bombs struck Iranian ballistic missile facilities as part of a joint operation that hit targets throughout Tehran, Kermanshah, Qom, Isfahan, Tabriz, and Karaj. Among the casualties were at least 153 people killed when a girls' school in Minab was struck. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed along with several senior Iranian officials. President Trump has claimed US forces sank nine Iranian naval ships and largely destroyed their naval headquarters. This unauthorized military action has triggered exactly the regional conflagration experts warned against. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes across the Middle East, killing at least nine people in Israel, three in the UAE, one in Kuwait, and three US service members. US facilities in Bahrain have been repeatedly targeted. Jordan, Cyprus, and Oman have been drawn into the conflict. Global oil prices are spiking and markets are falling as the economic consequences spread. Congress has the sole constitutional authority to declare war. The President has bypassed this requirement and launched offensive military strikes that have killed a foreign head of state without any imminent threat to American lives. This is not defensive action. This is an act of war conducted without congressional approval. I urge you to immediately invoke the War Powers Resolution to force withdrawal of US forces from these operations. Co-sponsor any legislation to defund these unauthorized strikes. The Constitution requires congressional authorization for military action of this scale, and your constituents demand you fulfill your oversight responsibility before more American service members are killed in an illegal war.
