Commemorating Charlie Kirk Harms Inclusion
To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell
From: A constituent in Seattle, WA
September 19, 2025
I’m writing to express my profound disappointment with the decision to honor Charlie Kirk with a commemorative day in October. As a constituent, I find this deeply troubling, especially considering the ongoing resistance to efforts to recognize Juneteenth and other historically significant days.
Charlie Kirk has built his platform on divisive rhetoric. He has publicly downplayed the importance of Juneteenth, criticized modern feminism, and opposed the concept of systemic racism. These aren’t mere opinions; they contribute to real harm and exclusion for many in our community. He vehemently opposes DEI initiatives, denying the presence of institutional and deeply rooted inequality. This denial gaslights marginalized communities and obstructs progress by erasing the issues we confront.
As a woman and a mother, I personally felt oppressed by his words. His views on women’s roles were demeaning and regressive. When my daughter heard him speak, I had to remind her that her value and future are not defined by the limitations he promotes. This should not be the kind of message our state honors.
Recognizing someone like Kirk sends the wrong signal—that bigotry can be excused if it’s disguised as political rhetoric. Washington should stand for inclusivity, truth, and respect for all communities.
I urge you to reconsider any support for gestures that elevate individuals who cause more harm than good. Please focus on honoring those who unite and uplift.
