I'm asking you to vote no on H.R. 7567, the 2026 Farm Bill introduced by House Agriculture Committee Chair GT Thompson on February 13. Section 12006 includes the Save Our Bacon Act, which would override hundreds of state and local laws protecting public health, farmers, and consumers.
This provision would nullify critical disease prevention measures, including state protections against avian influenza and screwworm. It would create legal chaos around livestock importation requirements in every state and generate costly litigation. Harvard Law School's Brooks McCormick Jr. Animal Law & Policy Program identified over 600 state laws and regulations at risk, including vaccination and food safety requirements.
The Save Our Bacon Act punishes farmers who invested in meeting higher standards like California's Prop 12 and Massachusetts's Question 3. It puts small and local farmers at a disadvantage while incentivizing a race to the bottom on animal welfare and safety standards. This represents a massive federal overreach into state authority that has existed for generations.
Vote no on H.R. 7567 unless Section 12006 is removed. States must retain the power to protect their residents, farmers, and food supply.
