I am writing to express my deep concern over recent actions taken by President Trump that appear to undermine democratic processes and the rule of law. These actions demand immediate attention and oversight from Congress.
Over Labor Day weekend, ICE agents attempted to deport hundreds of Guatemalan children in foster care, an action only halted by judicial intervention. This raises serious questions about the administration's respect for due process and human rights, especially concerning vulnerable minors.
Even more alarming is the recent U.S. "precision strike" off Venezuela's coast, resulting in 11 fatalities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statement that this was to "send a message" about drug trafficking is troubling, given that Venezuela is not typically associated with major cocaine trafficking routes. This action seems to bypass established legal and diplomatic channels, potentially violating international law.
These incidents suggest a pattern of the President acting as "judge, jury, and executioner" without proper checks and balances. Such unilateral actions set dangerous precedents and erode the foundations of our democratic system.
I urge you to take immediate action. Please initiate congressional hearings to investigate these incidents, particularly the legal basis for the strike near Venezuela. We need transparency about the decision-making process behind these actions and assurance that proper oversight mechanisms are in place.
Furthermore, I ask that you publicly condemn any attempts to circumvent due process, whether in immigration proceedings or international affairs. Our nation's strength lies in its commitment to the rule of law and respect for human rights.
Time is of the essence. With each passing day that these actions go unchecked, we risk further erosion of our democratic norms. I implore you to act swiftly to uphold the Constitution and protect the principles that define our nation.
