An Open Letter

To: Sen. Fischer, Rep. Bacon, Sen. Ricketts

From: A constituent in Bennington, NE

July 23

I am writing to you today as a constituent who believes that public safety must be our highest priority—and that genuine safety is built on evidence, not intuition or ideology. The safest a society will ever be is when its people have their fundamental needs met: stable housing, access to physical and mental healthcare, food security, quality education, and reliable economic opportunity. When these foundational needs are addressed, community stability follows, and crime rates naturally plummet. We live in an era rich with data, and the evidence regarding public safety is unequivocal: * The numbers do not care about our feelings or political opinions. What feels like a solution—such as relying solely on reactive punishment after harm has already occurred—does not always match what the empirical data proves actually prevents crime in the first place. * Evidence-based prevention works. Robust research across sociology, economics, and criminology consistently shows that investments in community infrastructure, violence intervention programs, and basic social safety nets yield the highest return on investment for reducing crime and saving lives. * Fiscal and social efficiency. Funding proactive, evidence-supported community programs costs taxpayers far less in the long run than managing the consequences of systemic neglect through court costs, emergency medical interventions, and incarceration. I urge you to strongly push and sponsor legislative agendas that ground our safety policies in peer-reviewed, empirical data. We must move past political rhetoric and emotional debates to implement solutions that actually keep our communities intact. Please prioritize evidence-based public safety policies that address the root causes of instability. When everyone in our communities has what they need to survive and thrive, we are all measurably safer. Thank you for your time, your service, and your commitment to data-driven governance. I look forward to seeing how your legislative agenda reflects these proven principles.
