The Most Brazen Act of Presidential Self-Dealing in History

To: Pres. Trump

I am writing to document the unprecedented dismantling of the rule of law as the executive branch is weaponized to enrich the President, shield his businesses, and fund his political movement. The discrepancy between a President's constitutional duty to faithfully execute the law vs the current administration's efforts to settle personal claims filed by the President against his own government is the textbook definition of state-level corruption. THE PRESIDENT NEGOTIATING A SETTLEMENT WITH HIMSELF In January, the President and his family businesses sued the IRS and the Treasury Department for $10 billion over a historical leak of his tax records. A federal judge openly questioned the constitutionality of a sitting President suing agencies under his direct command and ordered legal briefs to prove they are legitimately on opposing sides. Rather than allowing a court to rule, the President’s hand-picked Justice Department is rushing to settle the case out of court. This effectively allows the President to act as the plaintiff, the defense, and the keeper of the taxpayer-funded vault, bypassing basic checks and balances entirely. THE TAXPAYER-FUNDED POLITICAL SLUSH FUND Reports indicate the administration is fast-tracking a settlement where the President drops his personal lawsuit in exchange for the creation of a $1.7 billion taxpayer-funded compensation fund. This massive sum would be entirely controlled by the administration to distribute cash payouts to political loyalists, individuals investigated by previous administrations, and those charged in connection with the January 6 insurrection. Using a personal civil dispute to divert public tax dollars into a private political treasury fundamentally corrupts our democratic institutions. EXTORTING THE IRS TO WAIVE PERSONAL AUDITS As part of these active settlement deliberations, reports indicate the President is demanding that the IRS issue a public apology and permanently waive all active tax audits into himself, his family, and the Trump Organization. Under Section 7217 of the tax code, it is unlawful for the White House to interfere with or request the termination of a tax audit. The office of the presidency cannot be permitted to strong-arm its way into avoiding the tax accountability every citizen is subject to. The President and his connections are not above the law or the tax code. SUBVERTING FEDERAL COURTS TO PAY POLITICAL ALLIES The administration is actively utilizing the Treasury Department's Judgment Fund to financially reward the President's inner circle. The Department of Justice recently authorized a $1.25 million taxpayer-funded payout to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn to settle a malicious prosecution claim. This administrative settlement was fast-tracked by DOJ leadership despite Flynn having twice pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, and despite a federal judge previously rejecting his claims. Overriding the federal judiciary to hand public funds to personal allies turns neutral enforcement mechanisms into an executive reward system. The American public requires a government that respects the basic separation of powers, not an administration that treats the federal treasury as a private legal defense fund and political piggy bank. I look forward to a comprehensive response outlining what steps are being taken to halt this corrupt self-dealing and to protect taxpayer resources from executive malfeasance.
