If guilty people don’t have due process, neither do innocent people

To: Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

May 8

I am writing regarding this Republican administration’s continued assault of the Constitution and the due process it guarantees, and am urging you to oppose that assault. Our nation’s founders enshrined the right to due process to ensure equality under the law for all persons in the United States. Without due process, we have no way to ascertain whether a person is guilty or innocent. To deprive any person of the right to due process opens to door to deny others of that right. If guilty people don’t receive due process, neither do innocent people. Either everyone counts, or no one counts. This administration’s current practice of detaining people without trial or hearing, then moving them around the country and around the world is reminiscent of secret police in third-world dictatorships. It is a blatant violation of the Constitution. You, as a member of Congress, have the ability to check the excesses of the administration. You have the ability to ensure we remain a country bound by the rule of law. You swore an oath to do so. My wife and I implore you, again, too reclaim your power as a member of Congress and insist this administration respect the Constitution’s due process clause. To remain silent aids and abets its illegal actions.
