An Open Letter

To: Sen. Stanford, Rep. Kloba, Gov. Ferguson, Rep. Duerr

March 10

I am calling on you to stand up for safety and hold robotaxi companies accountable for how their cars drive on our roads. As a human driver, I’m required by law to move over for emergency vehicles and stop for school buses with flashing lights. If I don’t follow the law, I could get a ticket or even lose my license. Robotaxis should be treated the same. Blocking an ambulance or fire truck, or driving around a school bus with flashing lights and kids getting on or off the bus, is unacceptable. If a company’s “self-driving” system can’t handle flashing lights or sirens, it isn’t ready for public roads, and it should be kept out of service until the company proves it has fixed its problems. Please take any action necessary to hold robotaxi companies accountable for following traffic laws, and keeping our roads safe – especially when it comes to emergency vehicles and school buses.
