Oppose Trump's Tariffs and Threats Against NATO Allies Over Greenland

To: Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno, Rep. Landsman

From: A constituent in Lebanon, OH

January 19

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to oppose President Trump's announced 10% import tax on goods from eight nations, including NATO allies Norway and six European Union member states, scheduled to begin in February. These tariffs represent an unjustified escalation of tensions with our closest security partners over Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark. Trump's justification for these tariffs is deeply concerning. He claims they are retaliation for European countries deploying symbolic numbers of troops to Greenland for Arctic security training, exercises that were conducted in response to his own stated concerns about Russian and Chinese interference in the region. Punishing allies for addressing shared security threats undermines the NATO alliance at a moment when transatlantic cooperation is essential. The situation has already damaged diplomatic relations. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed receiving a message from Trump stating he no longer feels obligated to think purely of peace and declaring that "The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland." British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the tariff threats "completely wrong" and warned that a trade war serves no one's interests. Thousands of Greenlanders marched this weekend protesting any takeover effort, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated clearly that "We will not be pressured." These tariffs will harm American consumers and businesses while alienating democratic allies who share our values and security interests. European Council President Antonio Costa announced that EU leaders expressed "readiness to defend ourselves against any form of coercion," signaling potential retaliatory measures that could spiral into a broader trade war. I ask you to publicly oppose these tariffs, support legislation to prevent their implementation, and advocate for diplomatic resolution through calm discussion rather than economic coercion. Our alliances are built on mutual respect and international law, not threats and ultimatums.
