Vote no on the KIDS Act. This package — combining KOSA, the SAFE BOTS Act, the SCREEN Act, and more — is being rushed through Congress without individual debate, and it will do serious damage to privacy and free speech online for everyone, not just kids.
The bill's "knows or should have known" standard will push every platform to collect age data from all users just to avoid legal liability. That means age verification in practice, regardless of what the text claims. These systems are already known to fail disproportionately for people of color, people with disabilities, and trans and nonbinary people. On top of that, the content moderation requirements are so broad that platforms will over-censor lawful speech — teens talking about addiction recovery or harm reduction could get swept up in automated removals. And the encryption carve-outs don't cover all of the bill's requirements, creating real pressure to weaken private communications.
This is an age surveillance bill dressed up as child protection. Please vote no.
