I am extremely disheartened that our Federal Government has set up a watchdog website to stomp out DEI in public schools. While I know I could write a book on the benefits of DEI, I would like you to consider the following points. 1) Embracing DEI isn't about indoctrinating kids or spreading unAmerican ideas. DEI encourages students to welcome and embrace those who live differently and think differently from them. Allowing students the opportunity to forge friendships with those who are different from them encourages compassion and kindness. It also prevents acts of discrimination, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia. 2) DEI initiatives include helping Special Education students by making school equitable for them. Making a classroom inclusive by allowing students accommodations and modifications is an act of equity. Even allowing a near-sighted student to sit at the front of the room so they can see the board is embracing equity. 3) DEI saves lives. Students who see themselves represented in their environment are less likely to drop out or engage in harmful behaviors. Students are less likely to experience mental illness, depression, suicidal ideation, join gangs, or do drugs when DEI is integrated. I urge you to take action and demand the removal of the End DEI page on the Department of Education website. Hold the Trump Administration accountable for its assault on our students' well-being. Please respond to me and let me know the steps you are taking to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in our nation's schools.
