I strongly support Assemblyman Haney’s bill that would put a 50% tax on the profits of private immigration detention centers. This is a great mechanism to discourage the building of more detention centers here in California. The massive expansion of detention centers envisioned by the Trump administration is completely unnecessary if they are only trying to arrest and detain “the worst of the worst” but as we have seen, that’s not what they are doing. ICE is a completely rogue agency and they are sweeping up people on the basis of race not criminality. In addition, these detention centers are trying to maximize profits by holding people as long as possible and by providing inadequate food, water, shelter and medical care. An increasing number of people are dying in ICE custody. This tax proposal is a good way to exercise State control and keep these horrible places from being built here. Please support this bill.
