I am writing to express my support for Senator Josh Hawley’s investigation into Flock Safety and its network of AI-powered surveillance cameras. I urge you to support this inquiry and, if warranted, any further congressional action that may follow. Flock’s network now spans roughly 120,000 cameras nationwide, tracking vehicle movements across communities that never had a chance to weigh in on how this data is collected, stored, or shared. As Senator Hawley has noted, Congress never authorized the buildout of this surveillance infrastructure, and right now the only real safeguards on how this data is used are the company’s own internal policies. This is not a partisan issue. Concerns about Flock’s practices have come from members of both parties, and for good reason. There have been documented cases of police misuse of this technology, along with wrongful arrests stemming from false positives. Americans deserve to know who can access their location data, under what circumstances, and what recourse exists when the system gets it wrong. Senator Hawley’s request for documents on law enforcement access policies, camera placement, misuse incidents since 2021, data accuracy and security, and Flock’s contracts and revenue sources is a reasonable and necessary first step toward accountability. If Flock Safety declines to cooperate, I hope this investigation will not hesitate to pursue a subpoena to compel compliance. I would ask that you support this investigation, cooperate with any bipartisan effort to expand it if needed, and consider what legislative safeguards might be appropriate to ensure that surveillance networks of this scale operate with meaningful transparency and oversight going forward.
