Protect Media Independence

To: Sen. Cortez Masto, Sen. Rosen, Rep. Horsford, Pres. Trump

From: A constituent in Las Vegas, NV

April 28

I am writing to express deep concern over recent reports indicating that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), under Chairman Brendan Carr, is pressuring Paramount Global to dismantle its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs as a prerequisite for approving its proposed merger with Skydance Media. DEI initiatives are fundamental to fostering inclusive workplaces and ensuring that media content reflects the diverse fabric of our society. The FCC’s reported stance not only undermines these values but also sets a troubling precedent by allowing regulatory bodies to influence corporate policies unrelated to communications oversight. Moreover, there are concerns about potential political interference in media operations, as evidenced by the reported resignation of “60 Minutes” Executive Producer Bill Owens, who cited constraints on editorial independence amid the merger discussions. Such developments threaten the journalistic integrity that is vital to our democracy. I urge you to: • Advocate for the protection of DEI programs within media and telecommunications companies. • Ensure that the FCC’s merger review processes remain free from political influence and focus solely on communications-related considerations. • Support legislative measures that safeguard corporate autonomy in implementing inclusive policies. Maintaining the independence of media organizations and upholding inclusive practices are essential to preserving the democratic principles of our nation. I respectfully request your attention to this matter and your commitment to these values.
