I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I have been writing to you regularly since January of this year, because I believe in our systems of democracy and because I believe that you will listen fairly to all of the people here in Wisconsin that you represent.
Today I write to you not about any particular issue, but simply person to person. I am hoping that getting to know the people you serve will help you as a leader.
I work very hard as a teacher and love what I do. My husband is being brave to step into a completely new type of job than he's ever had before, as a small account manager at a label-making company. My son is navigating the wilds of middle school and my daughter is fiercely proud of being chosen as a Junior Coach for her 4th grade class next year (lots of helping the littler students on the playground).
We live a simple life but truly love it. We work in our community garden each week alongside our neighbors, spend time checking out piles of books at the library, and go camping every other weekend in the state parks. We believe in helping out someone who's having a hard day and getting to know our checkout person at Pick n Save by name (it's Amanda).
As you go about making decisions each day, can you please remember us? Remember that you are not on a sports team of "Republican" or "Democrat" whose goal is to win the most points and crush the opposing team. You are there to help all of us here in Wisconsin live good lives, where we can put food on the table for our families, hear and share news and opinions freely and fairly to be part of this amazing nation and world we live in, and help everyone in our community to have the lives THEY want to have.
I sincerely thank you for the work you do, because I know it must be very hard. While you and I might not agree about everything, I believe we can work together if we listen, share solutions, and think more about making life better for everyone.
