The immigration freeze on Afghan refugees who assisted U.S. forces during the war has left many in dangerous limbo, fearing retaliation from the Taliban. These Afghans underwent extensive vetting while awaiting approval to resettle in the United States as payment for their vital service. However, the executive order halting refugee admissions has stranded them in uncertainty, some still hiding in Afghanistan itself. This unconscionable treatment of allies who put their lives at risk to support American efforts is a betrayal that undermines national security and dishonors commitments made. The programs allowing their resettlement should be immediately reinstated as a matter of moral obligation and strategic interest. America's strength abroad depends on keeping its word to partners on the ground. Failing to do so harms future operations and abandons those who showed courage aiding U.S. aims. These Afghans deserve the chance at safety they were promised after grueling vetting, not open-ended peril for simply siding with American forces against shared enemies.
